There do seem to be many known instances where the police have managed to screw things up when it comes to deaf people but why is this. This seems to be happening quite a lot at the moment and happens mainly at night when a police officer shines the light through a deaf persons car. It is not fact that all deaf people read lips and although many of them can this is by no means set in stone for everyone. Even if they a good a situation like this would be impossible because the light is stopping them from being able to see. What can someone that is deaf do in a situation like this?
Well they would reach over and try to get the piece of information that states they are deaf, or perhaps reach for a hearing aid or something like that. If the officer has no idea what the person is bending down to try and reach they will begin to get a bit suspicious and then take out the sidearm that they carry. If the deaf person is not hearing exactly what the officer is saying and they are still looking the other way you can easily see what may happen.
To be fair I do see it from the police officers point of view, they have no idea what the person is reaching for, they could in fact not be going after their hearing aid but a gun or a knife and sometimes it just isn’t worth risking to wait and see. All officers need is a bit of training on the subject because it cannot be easy to handle a situation like this.
Nothign is worth risking so if you think your hearing is failing on you then please just go and get it looked into. You could look into getting hearing protection for musicians to be on the safe side. Go and get yourself a hearing aid assessment.
