Spammers have now discovered a way that they can survive for longer without being blocked. They are targeting free web hosting services in order for them to carry out their despicable deeds for longer without being caught. They are doing this by jumping on the backs of some legitimate free web hosting companies for as long as they can. Security company McAfee has brought this new troubling trend to light.
The Spam Report by McAfee for January 2010 has shown how these spammers are joining free web hosting companies and are utilising their offers of free hosting and free subdomains. The access to a third level domain that they are more often than not given means that to others they appear to be a genuine site. This is where the problem lies.
One of the main reasons for this increasing trend is the fact that spammers are aware that they will get blocked much quicker if they are not associated with a genuine site that has been existing for a while. The free web host will have been around for a while and more than likely has had genuine traffic involved. Because of this, the spam blockers around the world will not be as quick to block the host. More than a billion messages could be generated during this delay .
McAfee have reported that the most likely web hosts to be targeted are those with links to 0catch.com. The fact that they provide web hosting to anonymous accounts and do nothing to prevent malware from being hosted are the main reasons they are targeted.
This just adds to the many reasons why legitimate online businesses should not opt for free web hosting. Paying for good quality web hosting is something that all genuine online businesses should choose. That way they can be sure to protect their sites from these spammers.
