Australia offers travelers a diverse, fascinating and entertaining vacation, from modern cities to the Outback, desert to rain forest, stunning beaches and the Great Barrier Reef, unique wildlife and landscapes and much more. It can be challenging for unprepared visitors. You need to know some things if you plan on going here.
Remember that seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere. In winter, April through September, temperatures will be between 6 and 88 degrees. Although you can expect warm days, nights are cold, especially in the desert areas, so pack accordingly.
The second point to consider is the size of the country. If you want to go from one side to the other, plan flights.
Bigger cities will provide entertainment that will keep everyone busy for weeks. Each city has its own special charm, and public transport in Australia is extremely efficient, so you may not need to hire a car at all.
If you are planning on a road trip into the Outback, you will need to make extremely thorough preparations, and be well equipped to handle the harsh landscape and conditions you will encounter. Join a guided trip if you haven’t experienced off roading. Distances between populated areas can be long, and getting lost or stuck on the road is not advisable.
Australia is home to many unique, fascinating animals like kangaroos and koala bears. Many of the reptiles and insects are unfriendly. Make sure to have long pants and insect repellent.
Australia has many beautiful beaches. There are sting rays and sharks everywhere, so only swim in marked areas. A visit to the Great Barrier Reef will provide you with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity don’t leave this out of your itinerary if you can help it.
Most Australian states offer free camping sites with time limits. These may offer toilets and tables, or nothing at all. The National Parks also provide extremely affordable camping areas, albeit with limited facilities.
From the rain forest above Cairns in Daintree National Park to Ayers Rock and all around Australia, you will experience an informal, friendly atmosphere and astonishing natural beauty. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
