The city of Deadwood celebrated its twentieth anniversary on November the 1st. Has it really been 20 years since gambling was legalised in the town. Deadwood was no different to other USA towns and was in a deep recession back in 1989 with high unemployment and needed a cash injection. In an attempt to change what seemed like a pointless situation, local law was amended to allowing gambling in the city. No one could really have forecast the dramatic effect the change had on the town over the next 20 years!
Once the number of casinos started to grow it had a impact on the price of property which started to climb considerably. The city’s reputation as a Wild West town in the past worked to its favour and attracted a theme to the city. Television helped the popularity with the great series of Deadwood which ran for a fantastic three seasons. Soon the tourists were piling in with their money and all that could be heard was the clinking of coins in slot machines and on the tables.
Nowadays the town has over 3500 slot machines and licenses enabling play on 100 card tables. The millions of dollars that has poured into the town due to the casino industry have been put to good use and Forbes Magazine has recently awarded the town of Deadwood the highly acclaimed title of America’s Prettiest Town!
The town is at last celebrating the success that has come with the legislation of gambling and this is partly due to the fantastic press the casinos have received. As the development in Deadwood of entertainment venues grows, it seems to look likely that it will be a popular casino location for many years to come.
