If you see pictures of soldiers from World War I and World War II you’ll notice that the clothing that they wear bears many similarities to the clothing that we still wear these days. This is especially so for jackets, with bomber jackets being a classic example. They were originally designed to keep pilots warm whilst flying and they were so effective at doing that they have they not only were they worn afterward the Wars but were for a time the jacket of choice for men. There are some really cool styles of bomber jackets available now, and their close fit and elasticated waistline and cuffs mean that there are few jackets around that can provide the same amount of warmth.
Pea coats also have their roots from the same era. They are thigh length jackets made of wool, which have several oversized buttons down the front of them. These were a common sight on soldiers in trenches during the Wars. They have continued to be popular due to their ‘no nonsense’ approach. Men tend to prefer simple styles and looks and it’s difficult to get more simple than a pea coat. A black, navy blue or brown pea coat looks good with anything, from a pair of scruffy jeans to a formal pair of pants.
A longer, more formal, alternative to pea coats are wool trench coats. Typically available in black, blue, gray and brown, they look great for wearing to work in the winter months. They are particularly great for guys living in wet countries because they keep not only the top of the body dry but also your pants too. A patterned scarf is nice a compliment to them, as they add a bit of color and contrast to your look.
For dates and nights out friends, a nice looking blazer jacket is a good item to have in your wardrobe. It’s the perfect item for adding a bit of formality and style to the jeans and t-shirt look that most guys are fond of. Unlike the other jackets mentioned above, you’re not really restricted to muted colors when it comes to blazer jackets. In terms of materials too, there is a much greater choice available.
The jackets mentioned above are all classic styles which will be in style for a long while yet. So, rather than fret about what to buy the next time you need a new jacket, opt for one of the above styles and you can rest assured that you will look the part, whether it be for work or play.
